The scheduler is ok. Maybe you need to use and external trigger to keep the cron system of WP working correctly. See the Newsletter documentation and the delivery engine dedicated page.

You should add the orderby too, but I believe the orderby will extract the oldest post if used. Just user the array_reverse of PHP.

There is not a hook for the message body, anyway it’s not enough to change the email body. Other than replace the images with a cid: you should even add the relative attachment to the phpmailer object.
