Authentication failed means you are using the wrong credentials. Are you using the google apps to have a gmail account with your domain in the address?

Ah, not pop.gmail.com the pop is to get the email, not to send. You should use the SMTP address (may be mail.google.com – I don’t remeber).

You can user the subscribe method of the “NewsletterSubscription” class, ot the save_user of the Newsletter class… or even do a direct update into to the database.

Templates contain images. Try a template wit images and remove them. Then after that test, if it fail, remove the tracking on the same newsletter and send the test again.
