OK, I got it to work! I used my own domain name because I had already had the domain on google apps (from putting my domain name on a blogger blog). The pain in the *ss about this set-up is that I have to create a new email address through google apps instead of my domain host.
I don’t know why, but the pop instead of the smtp setting worked. The test worked anyway… not seeing any bounces yet and and I’m more than 50% through my newsletter.
These are the settings the worked for me.. in case anyone else has the same problem and messed-up set-up:

port: 995
user: bounce@hippressurecoooking.com
password: *******
